Moving to Edmonton? Pick the neighbourhood before the house

Edmonton HQ TeamOct 28, 20264 min read

When people move to Edmonton from another province, they usually start by scrolling listings. We get it. But the families who settle in happiest almost always chose the part of town first and the house second.

Start with your daily routine

Where will you work? Where will the kids go to school? How far are you willing to drive in January? Edmonton is a big city spread out across a lot of ground, and the same commute can feel very different depending on which side of the river you land on. Mapping your weekday first narrows the search fast.

Learn the city in zones, not 400 neighbourhoods

Edmonton has hundreds of named communities, which is overwhelming when you’re new. We break the city and surrounding region into a handful of zones so you can compare the feel of each area: established and walkable, newer and family-focused, close to the river valley, or a quieter town just outside the city. Our neighbourhoods page is a good place to start.

Check schools early

If you have kids, school catchments can decide the search for you. Edmonton has both public and Catholic boards, each with its own boundaries. You can check them on our schools and catchments map before you book a single viewing.

Think about winter, honestly

An attached garage, a sensible driveway, and how far you are from a main road all matter more here than they might where you’re coming from. They’re worth weighing early, not after you’ve fallen for a house.

See it in person if you can

Photos don’t tell you how a street feels. If you’re visiting before the move, our Relocation team offers a 90-minute tour of the areas on your shortlist, so you can get a feel for the city before you commit to a house in it.
